The possible hearth (F003) was exposed below the sod and topsoil (F001) at a depth of 0.36m. It measured 0.86m in length, 0.61m in width and 0.2m in depth and had been filled with a mid – dark brown silty clay containing occasional inclusions of charcoal and oxidized clay (F004). A C14 date was obtained from the hazel charcoal from the fill of this feature during the Stage II testing phase, which returned a date of AD 1030 – AD 1189 (95.4% probability) which dates to the early medieval period.
