The test excavation of a site in advance of its development at Convent Road, Ballinrobe, County Mayo, was carried out between 12 and 14 July 2016. The proposed development consisted of the construction of seven two-storey dwelling houses. Testing was required as Further Information by Mayo County Council due to the scale of the proposed development. The site consisted of a field of pasture and was located adjacent to, but outside of, the constraint for Ballinrobe Town (MA118-022).
Testing consisted of the excavation (by machine) of six trenches, located to best cover the area of the proposed development. The trenches measured 60m, 110m, 110m, 90m, 104m and 99.8m long respectively; 1.7-2.4m wide and 0.1-0.75m deep. Below the topsoil in five of the six trenches were natural subsoils and bedrock. An area of fill was visible below the topsoil and above bedrock in the sixth trench. The topsoil contained modern pottery sherds, modern glass fragments, red brick fragments, three animal bone fragments and an un-inscribed clay pipe stem fragment. Unfortunately no datable artefacts were visible within the fill. Nothing of archaeological significance was in evidence.
