Monitoring of groundworks at a development in Ballintemple townland, Meelick, Swinford, County Mayo was carried out on 10 November 2014 and 30 May 2016. The development consisted of the construction of a dwelling house and domestic garage, on-site waste water treatment system, new site entrance and ancillary site development works. Due to the proximity of the proposed development site to an enclosure (MA061-131), an impact assessment, which was required as part of a Request for Further information by Mayo County Council, recommended that all groundworks involved in the creation of the set-back along the road, the removal of the south-east site boundary, the construction of the new entrance and driveway and the connection to the group water scheme be monitored. The grant of planning permission by the local authority included the recommendations contained in the impact assessment. There was no visible surface trace of the enclosure, which was located in a field across the road to the south-east of the proposed development site. The monument was shown on the 1837 edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch sheet as D-shaped and truncated on the straight side to the north-west by the road. The monitoring revealed topsoil above natural subsoil. There was no evidence of the remains of the adjacent enclosure. Nothing of archaeological significance was uncovered.
