The courthouse site is located immediately outside of the zone of potential for archaeological remains associated with the historic town LI005-017. It is located on a former artillery barracks which was completed in 1807 and was in operation throughout the 19th century. A number of different barracks buildings were located within this complex. There are two protected structures on the site which are being retained and restored as part of the new development, namely the gate house and magazine store (RPS 334, 361).
Continuous monitoring of all on site groundworks was undertaken during late 2015 and the first half of 2016. Monitoring identified the foundations of the former 19th-century barracks buildings (stables and guard rooms) around the perimeter of the site. These wall foundations were recorded/surveyed with the lower portions of these walls remaining in situ within the new development. In addition to this a portion of the cobbled yard (parade ground) was excavated. A bone tooth brush and blazer button were recovered in association with these cobbles.
