Adare manor is undergoing extension and refurbishment which includes extensive works in the grounds of the estate. A number of demesne paths and drainage features were identified during monitoring. An area of Bronze Age activity was revealed in the south-west corner of the townland during monitoring. The features revealed included eight cremation burial pits, two similar creamtion-type pits containing no cremated bone, a possible creamtion pyre and three probable domestic pits extending over an area measuring 180m north-south by 130m. Two post-medieval drainage features and two post-medieval pits were also revealed.
The creamted remains were analysed by Linda Lynch and represent at least four adults and two juveniles with two of the cremation burials containing bone that could only be identified as human. Radiocarbon dates are pending.
This area of Bronze Age activity is approximately 600m south-east of a number of Bronze Age cremation pits (LI021-182002-), an early medeival enclosure (LI021-182003-) and several miscellaneous features (LI021-182001-) identified and excavated in the adjoining townland of Boulabally by John Kavanagh in 2005.
