Pre-development testing for a proposed wind farm site at Coollegrean wind farm, Brosna, Co. Kerry was undertaken over a period of 4 days between 7 and 29 March 2016. The test excavation was carried out on foot of a condition of planning permission granted by Kerry County Council. The proposed development constitutes the construction of a 7 turbine wind farm. No recorded archaeological monuments are located on the wind farm site which is largely located within forested upland blanket bog.
The excavation of 22 test trenches did not reveal any archaeological finds, features or deposits. Natural subsoil was exposed at the base of all the test trenches and varied between grey/beige clay and grey stoney clay. Peat depth varied throughout the site, with the greatest depths encountered at T4 hardstand and base. Many of the areas tested comprised in situ peat with disturbance only evident in the upper levels due to drainage and tree root activity associated with the forestry process. No worked wood or man-made arrangements of wood were encountered in any test trench.
