Stage (i)a archaeological test trenching was undertaken at four locations (Archaeological Areas 1–4) in advance of the N86 Lispole to Ballynasare Lower & Ballygarret to Camp Road Improvement Scheme, Co. Kerry. The Investigation was carried out under Ministerial Direction No. A070 between 26 April and 12 May, 2016. It followed on from an earlier phase of testing undertaken by Shane Delaney in 2015 along the length of the scheme under Registration No. E004617 (extended for the 2016 works) Ecological concerns prevented the excavation of 16 trenches in Testing Area 1 in 2015. The 2016 testing also included a single test trench at Testing Area 2 and testing at Testing Area 3, an area previously excluded from the Stage (i)a testing programme. Testing Area 4 comprises a single trench in the vicinity of KE044-135.

The area available for archaeological investigation in Testing Areas 1–4 was 40,827m2. A total of 4,104m2 (2,280 linear metres) of archaeological test trenches were excavated in these areas, representing an overall sample of 10.05%. Three sites were identified during the testing of Testing Areas 1–4.

An Bhánóg Theas (Banoge South) 3 was identified as a burnt mound. An Bhánóg Theas (Banoge South) 4 was identified as a burnt mound. Ballygarret 1 was identified as a rectangular pit containing charcoal. These sites were subsequently excavated under Registration Nos E004747-E004749.
