An excavation was undertaken at Kilpaddoge, Tarbert, Co. Kerry, carried out on behalf of Ronaver Energy Ltd on the site of a proposed sub-station associated with the Tullahennel Windfarm. The approval for the development was granted by Kerry County Council 13/138.

The client needed to complete the excavation of these features as soon as possible as they were within the footprint of the ongoing development, and there was no potential for preservation in situ. Rubicon Heritage Services Ltd. were commissioned to carry out the excavation of this area, with the monitoring of other works to be continued by Tobar Archaeological Services under licence 16E0152.

Three areas of archaeology were identified by Tobar Archaeological Services during the monitoring of the works comprising two burnt mounds and a cluster of pits.

Full excavation of the identified archaeology was carried out between 11 and 15 July 2016 under licence 16E0362. The preliminary evaluation of the findings suggests the presence of two prehistoric burnt mounds, two burnt spreads, two stone-lined troughs, one simple earth-cut trough, a hearth and four pits.

Further analysis of the results of the excavation is required to refine the interpretation of the site and a final excavation report will be produced.
