Excavation works undertaken as part of the proposed path and paving works at the site of Aughnanure Castle (GA054:002) were monitored. During the course of the works existing paving slabs were removed in front of the entrance to the castle, the entrance to the tower and the toilets and adjacent to the castle. Removal of these slabs revealed disturbed ground, either a grey gravel layer or a light brown sand. Excavations for the provision of a new pathway extending from the castle to the toilets revealed sod and topsoil to a depth of 0.2m coming down onto a grey gravel layer and a light brown clay midway along the path. No features and/or artefacts of archaeological significance were encountered during the course of the monitoring. Excavations revealed disturbed layers of mixed gravel and clay.
