Monitoring was carried out in relation to the construction of surface sewers in and around the village of Kinvara, Co. Galway. The works were located along the existing road network, largely within the extent of the village, as well as along a minor road which runs in a general north-easterly direction from the N67 to the west of the village. Works were also undertaken along a coastal margin between the village and proposed waste water treatment facility and the northern limit of the village, as well as along the line of the proposed outfall from the waste water treatment facility. The latter area was partially overgrown on the landwards side. The foreshore element largely comprised an area of large stones and boulders, extending into the bay, together with silty sand. In general, the lands surrounding the village are slightly undulating with relative higher ground to the south, east and north-west of the village. These lands are largely used for pasture.
The works were undertaken on behalf of Galway County Council/Coffey Group. The work was carried out in line with a planning condition applied by An Bord Pleanála (ref: 07.JP0017)
A number of post-medieval features were identified during the course of the monitoring, including a cobbled surface, the infill behind the quay walls and a culvert. A displaced human jawbone was also recovered from a disturbed context. These features were recorded as they were encountered and there are no further archaeological requirements for the specified area stripped under archaeological supervision.
