Testing was carried out at Killeely More, Co. Galway in advance of proposed channel widening works associated with the Dunkellin River Flood Relief Scheme. Testing was recommended in the Environmental Impact Statement as a fulacht fiadh (GA103-134) is recorded in the field some 50m south of the riverbank at Killeely More. The field is overgrown with reeds and no surface trace of the monument was observed during site inspection.
A single test trench (L 35m; Wth 2m) was opened within the 20m wide land take corridor on the south bank of the Dunkellin River. The tested ground was stony with numerous large slab-like boulders lying just below the field surface. The dark grey/brown clayey silt topsoil was slightly peaty and heavily matted with roots. It had an averagre thickness of 0.25m and overlay compact grey silty sand and yellow-brown clayey silt subsoils. No archaeological material was found.
