Monitoring of trench excavations with respect to the installation of a Marine Outfall Pipe associated with the Kinvara Sewerage Scheme was undertaken in compliance with Condition 5 of the Grant of Planning from An Bord Pleanála (Plan Ref: 07.JP0017). The work was undertaken on behalf of Irish Water and Galway County Council. All topsoil stripping/site preparation works onto the surface of the underlying geological (archaeological sterile) subsoils associated with the terrestrial component of the pipeline, together with required trench excavation crossing the intertidal shoreline and subtidal habitats of Kinvara Bay, was monitored. The latter portion of the works was largely undertaken by a machine fitted on a barge. The marine pipe trench was generally c. 6m wide at the top and up to 3m deep below sea bed; the sides were stepped and the base was c. 2m wide, and the monitoring of the associated excavations indicated that the sea/bay bed along the line of the outfall pipe comprises silty clays/muds over a matrix of shell and clay, of various depths, over a matrix of boulders and gravels in grey boulder clay. No evidence for subsurface features or deposits of archaeological interest or potential was uncovered and no artefacts of archaeological/historical interest were recovered during the works.
