An archaeological assessment and associated testing was carried out pre-planning in order to determine the nature and extent of any archaeological remains that may be present on the development lands. The proposed development lands are located on a brownfield site containing disused industrial warehouses and sheds set around concrete yards at the north eastern side of the harbour. Nearby are a tower-house (DU023-02001), town defences (DU023-02002), a well (DU023-02003), a ‘quay’ (DU023- 02004), and a Martello tower (DU-023-022). Four test trenches were excavated across the development site with a 0.5m wide toothless bucket. The stratigraphy varied slightly in each trench but generally consisted of c. 0.07 - 0.2m m of concrete/gravel/infill, 0.2 – 0.4m of modern fill/topsoil intermixed with debris overlying subsoils of natural yellow stony clay. Nothing of archaeological significance was recorded during the testing.
