A programme of test trenching was undertaken within the footprint of a proposed residential development at Brennanstown, Cabinteely, Dublin 18 as part of a pre-planning impact assessment. The proposed development area is located to the immediate south of a 2003 residential development (Planning Ref.: P/3348/02) constructed by Tudor Homes. This site was subject to testing (Elder 2003, Licence Ref.: 03E1494) and subsequent excavation of a post-medieval brick clamp prior to construction (Halpin 2003, Licence Ref.: 03E1681). A fulacht fiadh site (DU026-159), identified during testing, was preserved in situ as part of this previous development. More recently, a separate testing investigation (Bailey, Licence 16E0468) was carried out within the footprint of the Druids Glen Link Road, which divides the current site. This was carried out on behalf of Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council.
A total of 31 trenches were excavated within the development area, measuring 1,511 linear metres, representing 6.5% of the overall site. There are no recorded monuments located within the development area.
Testing identified a post-medieval brick kiln. This was also identified during the testing of the proposed link road. The large feature is similar in form to a brick clamp previously excavated to the north of the site in 2003 as part of an earlier development.
Two probable cremation burial pits were identified within Trench 7. These are likely to date to the Bronze Age period and similar examples have already been identified within the surrounding landscape.
