Monitoring of groundworks associated with the redevelopment of the gym building at St Vincent’s Castleknock College, Dublin 15 was undertaken between 1 and 27 September 2016. These works were undertaken for DMOD Architects on behalf of the Board of Management, St Vincent’s Castleknock College. Monitoring was required in response to a planning conditions Nos. 9 and 10 applied by Fingal County Council (Planning Reference No. FW16A/0003).
The proposed development site is located within the campus of Castleknock College. It involves the demolition of the 408 sq.m. sports hall and entrance hall and the erection in their place of a c. 620 sq.m. sports hall and associated entrance hall, office and storage rooms (c. 400 sq. m.).
The college campus incorporates the centre of the medieval lands of Castleknock as held by the Tyrell family. Four RMP sites—DU017‐012001 (Motte and Bailey); DU017‐012002 (Castle); DU017‐013001 (Burial); DU017‐013002 (Windmill)—are located within the College campus. The site of the new sports hall lies within the constraint area for DU017‐012001 (Motte and Bailey) and DU017‐012002 (Castle). In addition, the main building complex incorporates a number of Protected Structures and there are additional buildings that are listed in the NIAH only. Archaeological investigations in the eastern part of the campus in 2007–8 uncovered evidence for burials that have been preserved in situ (Linda Lynch 2008:378).
No features of archaeological significance were identified during the course of the monitoring programme.
