Monitoring was carried out at 5 Hanover Quay, Dublin 2 on the north side of the Grand Canal Basin. Monitoring of ground reduction works was carried out between May and August 2016 in response to planning conditions attached to the development (Planning Ref.: DSDZ3866/14). This condition followed a previous testing assessment carried out at the site n September 2015 under the same licence. Monitoring of the ground reduction followed as per the contractor’s programme of works.
Excavation was undertaken to the level of the estuarine river silts, which occurred at a maximum depth of c. 4.1m level across the site. The general stratigraphy encountered matched that of the previously excavated test trenches. This consisted of a loose concrete/gravel ground surface over made ground containing 19th-century building rubble, red brick and reed iron, above grey estuarine silts. A number of walls, cobbled surfaces and culverts were identified. These features were found to correspond to structures depicted on the historic mapping relating to the heavy industry which occurred previously within the site and its vicinity. All features identified on site represent 19th/20th-century features. No features or deposits of archaeological significance were encountered during the monitoring of the ground reduction. A second phase of monitoring will be carried out when further excavations will be carried out, under a reactivation of the existing licence.
