Testing was carried out at the site of a proposed commercial development on Castleknock Road, Castleknock, Dublin 15 in response to a request for further information by Fingal County Council (Planning Ref.: FW16A/0006). The request included geophysical survey and testing, however following a review of the site by Joanna Leigh it was determined that the conditions were not suitable for geophysical survey. A licence was issued on this basis for the testing of the site.

The area of proposed development consists of an irregular plot of greenfield area located to the east (rear) of several modern structures that front onto Castleknock Road. A review of the historic mapping has shown that the site was located within fields in Glebe land on the edge of Castleknock Village. A church (DU017-008) and holy well (DU017-009) are located c. 50m west of site.

A total of eight test trenches were excavated across the available green space. These indicated a largely undisturbed site with sterile topsoil, providing no archaeological evidence as to former occupation or usage for the site. No deposits or features of archaeological potential were recorded at this time. It is possible however that small-scale previously unrecorded archaeological features may survive beneath the current ground surface, outside of the current investigated area.
