Intermittent monitoring was carried out during groundworks for the redevelopment of 13–17 Dawson Street, Dublin 2 between February and July 2016. The development area fronts onto Dawson Street and is bordered to the south by Molesworth Street. The site is located within the zone of archaeological potential for Dublin City (DU018-020) and two sub-constraints are listed as occurring in the south-western portion of the site fronting onto Molesworth Street. These sub-constraints are classified as 18th/19th-century houses (DU018-020238, DU018-02024) and correspond to the structures depicted by Rocque on the corner of Dawson Street and Molesworth Street on his map c. 1756. There are no visible surface traces of these buildings surviving. No previous archaeological field work has been carried out within the proposed development area, although several investigations undertaken in the immediate vicinity have uncovered deposits and remains largely confined to the 18th and 19th centuries. Cellar structures associated with Nos 15, 16 and 17 Dawson Street were identified immediately west of the proposed development area during monitoring of the Luas Cross City Scheme in 2013 (Licence Ref.: 13E0200). No archaeology was found during the current phase of monitoring. It is likely that any remains associated with the recorded post-medieval house sites (DU018-020238, DU018-02024) was removed during construction works during the 1970s.
