Testing was carried out within the footprint of the proposed upgrade of the sports grounds at St Michael’s College, Ailesbury Road, Dublin 4. The site is bordered by housing which fronts onto Ailesbury Road to the north, Merrion Road to the east and Nutley Avenue to the south.

Testing of the site was carried out in response to planning conditions attached to the proposed development (Planning Ref.: 3441/15). It follows on from a previous archaeological desktop assessment, which was carried out by IAC Ltd in May 2015.

Two RMP designations are located within a 500m radius of the development area. The closest of these sites is shown on the RMP map immediately north of the proposed development with the zone of archaeological potential extending onto the sports grounds. This is recorded as a holy well (DU022-085) and some of the historic mapping of the area indicates that it may well be located just inside the north-west corner of the proposed development area.

The proposed development area has been subject to a thorough assessment by means of eight excavated test trenches totaling c. 800 linear metres. Nothing of archaeological significance was identified during the course of this work. The proposed development area has been affected by landscaping associated with the existing pitches. There is no predicted adverse impact upon the archaeological resource as a result of the development going ahead.
