An archaeological evaluation was carried out prior to the proposed insertion of a new access road to Edenderry House, 133 Ballylesson Road, Lisburn. Phase 1 was conducted under licence AE/15/25E and uncovered four features located within Trench 3. These features are a possible post-hole [3005], a possible small pit [3007], a large pit [3010] and a ditch [3013]. The report concluded that following the granting of planning permission, the area of archaeological material within Trench 3 should be archaeologically topsoil stripped and all features identified be fully recorded. It further concluded that the remaining section of the development which has not yet been tested should be subject to archaeological topsoil stripping. These works were completed within Phase 2 of the development.
Monitoring of topsoil removal was conducted within the full extent of the proposed access lane in the section of Test trenches 3, 4 and 5. This identified a number of archaeological deposits consisting of 3 layers intersected by a linear feature in Trench 5. These features were subsequently surface cleaned and recorded before preserving in situ, sealed with a geotextile layer, which in turn was recovered with hardcore.
No further archaeological deposits were identified during the course of the evaluation.
