An archaeological evaluation was carried out prior to the proposed construction of 3 townhouses on land adjacent to No. 2 Main Street, Millisle, Co. Down. The proposed development site is located within the area of archaeological potential for Millisle.
Two trenches were excavated across the site using a back-acting machine fitted with a toothless bucket. Both trenches measured 2m wide. Two fills were removed. The first was a light brown gritty sand, which had a maximum depth of 0.2m. Below this was a layer of rubble consisting of dark grey clay with very frequent small and large sub-angular stones, which had a maximum depth of 0.4m. This directly overlay naturally occurring subsoil which consisted of bands of compact yellow clay interspersed with very infrequent inclusion of degraded stone.
No archaeological deposits were identified during the course of the evaluation.
