An archaeological evaluation was carried out prior to the proposed demolition of the existing property and construction of a replacement dwelling at 28-30 High Street, Killyleagh.
A single trench was excavated using a back-acting machine fitted with a toothless bucket. It extended approximately west-east across site and had a length of 25m. Two fills were removed. The first was a light grey gritty sand that was used as bedding for the flagstones, which had a maximum depth of 0.1m. Below this was a layer of rubble consisting of dark grey clay with very frequent small and large sub-angular stones, which had a maximum depth of 0.3m. This directly overlay naturally occurring subsoil which consisted of bands of compact yellow clay interspersed with infrequent inclusion of degraded stone.
Nothing of archaeological significance was identified in this trench.
