The archaeological monitoring of the works began on 30 November 2015 and was completed on 26 July 2016. The works were divided between ground preparation and then the laying of the new surfaces. We were only required to be on site for the ground preparation. This included: the lifting of surfaces in two areas identified as areas of interest, Marcus Street and the southern end of Hill Street, new drainage channels, new street lights and the replacement of kerbing. Generally much of the works did not expose undisturbed subsoil. This only occurred with the relocation of lamp posts and occasionally gullies. When exposed this was grey riverine or estuarine mud or clay with occasional oyster shell or mussel shells. Nothing of an archaeological nature was uncovered within any of the trenches.
