Archaeologically monitored test trenching was to be undertaken at this site prior to re-development as recommended in the Archaeological Programme of Works, however during detailed analysis of the soil, it was discovered that asbestos particles are present in the soil at up to a meter deep. It was agreed with HED Archaeological Inspector J. McDowell, that due to the health and safety risk the excavation of the archaeological test trenches could not go ahead. The presence of the asbestos so far down the soil profile also proves that the ground was disturbed in the recent past and that if archaeological material had been within the development site at some point, it would no longer be there now.
