Archaeological monitoring was carried out for site investigation works for a portion of Donegal Countywide Watermains Rehabilitation Scheme. A total of two rotary cores and one trial pit were monitored at this location c.100m south-west of Assaroe Abbey (DG107‐044001‐4). There are no recorded archaeological sites within the immediate vicinity of the works. The SI works are within a milling complex and 17th-century bridge, both listed on the Record of Protected Structures for Co. Donegal.
Two rotary drilled cores approximately 100mm in diameter were to ascertain if the ground is suitable for directional drilling. The content of the upper layers of the cores was examined; no evidence for any archaeological material was detected.
A trial pit was hand-excavated on the bridge, it measured 0.5-1m x 0.5m depth. A portion of the bridge structure was visible at the base of test pit but was not impacted by the works.
No further evidence for any archaeological finds, features or deposits was detected.
