A pre-development archaeological evaluation in the form of test trenching was carried out at the site of a proposed single dwelling at lands 90m south of 38 Brookmount Road, Loup, Co. Londonderry in response to a request for additional information by DfC:HED with specific relation to the site of an undefined enclosure which is marked on 19th-century maps as being located within the development area. The evaluation confirmed that no archaeological remains survive within the footprint of the proposed dwelling, but that remains associated with the enclosure did survive within the northern portion of the site within the location of the proposed access lane, these being in the form of a low bank and ditch. No artefacts were recovered from the ditch upon partial hand excavation, and therefore its date and origin cannot be confirmed. The extent of the enclosure has been recorded in plan and it is therefore recommended that it be preserved in situ as per planning policy guidelines and that no development take place within its location or within 10m of its boundary. It is also recommended that the proposed access to the new dwelling be routed elsewhere within the development area where it has been proven that no archaeological remains survive.
