An archaeological evaluation was carried out prior to the proposed development of a new Maritime Museum and Archive at Ebrington Square, Derry. The proposed museum site is located within the wall of the Star Fort at Ebrington Barracks which is a scheduled monument (LDY 014:072). The site has undergone extensive regeneration, all of which has been conducted under archaeological supervision (licence Nos AE/07/198 and AE/10/182). This has lead to the discovery of significant subsurface remains relating to the Star Fort and its associated buildings.

For this evaluation, a total of 6 bore holes and 5 test pits were excavated across the development area. Excavation of test pits was carried out using a back-acting machine fitted with a toothless bucket. The first 1.2m of the bore holes were excavated by hand before a drilling rig was used to continue excavation. Bore holes 2–5 were excavated using a Dando 2000 cable percussion drilling rig to a depth of 10m. However, due to access requirements bore holes 1A and 1B were excavated using the smaller Dando Terrier sampling rig to a depth of 3.6m and 5m respectively.

No archaeological deposits were identified during the course of the monitoring.
