A single foul sewer line was to be replaced within the historic core of Magherafelt. The trench was opened under supervision using an appropriate mechanical excavator fitted with a narrow toothless bucket, subsequent to initial ground breaking, or with a steel saw and rock-breaking attachment. The fill above the pipe to be replaced was removed and the live pipe was then removed and replaced. The area was then backfilled and re-tarred. This replacement was carried out in approximately 12m sections, though this varied according to location and whether manholes were also to be replaced.

Nothing of an archaeological nature was uncovered during pipe replacement or manhole construction over the 140m of the project which required archaeological supervision.
