Underwater Archaeological Impact Assessment (UAIA) took place along the approach channel to Castletownbere Harbour. The assessment was undertaken as part of pre-planning considerations associated with the proposed insertion of two breakwater structures, the reclamation of two sections of intertidal foreshore to form part of a new wharf structure on Dinish Island, and the dredging of the adjacent channel area to accommodate a deep-water berth.
On-site work comprised the systematic non-disturbance inspection of three seabed and intertidal foreshore areas surrounding the above impacts:
• Area 1, ITM: 467932E, 545582N - NGR: 467958E, 545337N
• Area 2, ITM: 468092E, 545499N - NGR: 467965E, 545342N
• Area 3, ITM: 468040E, 545736N - NGR: 467994E, 545502N
The assessment recorded seabed/foreshore topography and provided a detailed account of the existing marine environment at these locations. The on-site work was carried out on 1 December 2016. No material, deposits, or structures of archaeological significance were encountered as part of the assessment.
