Test excavations were carried out on behalf the Green Mills Energy Ltd. C O/Sgurr Energy Ltd. at Farrangalway, Co. Cork in response to a request for further information by Cork County Council related to planning application 16/04204.

The proposed development involves the construction a solar PV array consisting of approximately 20,000 solar panels on ground-mounted steel frames, a single-storey delivery substation, a single-storey inverter/transformer units, underground cable ducts hardstanding area, boundary security fence, site entrance, access tracks, CCTV and all associated site works at Farrangalway, Knocknahilan, Mullendunny, Kinsale, Co. Cork.

A total of 28 test trenches totalling 1400 linear metres were excavated between the 24 and 26 August 2016 within the footprint of the development to assess the potential for subsurface archaeological remains. This represented a 2.5% testing sample of the proposed 10ha development area. The trenches targeted geophysical anomalies identified in a preceding geophysical survey.

Excavation revealed a number of shallow linear features (corresponding with the geophysical survey) which represented former field boundaries of likely post-medieval date. All other features represented post-medieval agricultural activity.
