Testing was carried out at the site of a proposed wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) at Shanacloon, Ballymakeery, Co. Cork. It followed from a desktop assessment (Tobin 2016) which recomended testing in greenfield areas and survey of the outfall location. The area of the proposed development comprises of rough pasture with outcrops of bedrock and marshy grassland on the southern banks of the River Sullane.
A total of 12 trenches were excavated over one day in May 2016 within the footprint of the WWTP and pipeline. No features of archaeological potential were identified at this time. Although testing did not identify any potential archaeological deposits or features it was noted that there was slight potential for an impact to any remains located outside of the investigated areas. It was recomended that ground disturbances be subject to monitoring.
