Testing was carried out at the site of a proposed extension to a waste water treatment plant (wwtp) located at Scarteen Lower, Newmarket, Co. Cork, undertaken by Fintan Walsh and Bruce Sutton of IAC Ltd to fulfil a request for Further Information by Cork County Council for the planning application (Planning No.: 164895).
A total of eight test trenches were excavated across the proposed wwtp site. No features of archaeological potential were identified during testing of the site. SAP 1, a tree circle shown on the first edition OS map, appears to relate to a sub-circular area of bedrock exposed in Trenches 4–7. This bedrock may have formed a platform that was used to create a landscape feature in the 18th and 19th centuries. No features of archaeological potential were noted.
Archaeological monitoring was undertaken of the site of the WWTP in June 2017 under an extension to licence 16E0364. Nothing of archaeological significance was found.
