A test excavation carried out to assess the archaeological potential of a development site at Castleoaks, County Carlow. The proposed development will consist of 106 residential units and ancillary works in the townland of Rathnapish near the town of Carlow. The site is located within 100m of a cremation pit and possible fulacht fiadh excavated during the construction of an adjacent housing estate (Licence 05E1359). The pit (diam. 0.35m) containing human burnt bone and charcoal, produced a radiocarbon date of 1888-1746 BC cal.
The assessment and test excavation found no significant archaeological remains across the proposed development site. There was no evidence to suggest that the archaeological remains found in the adjacent field extended into the development site.
