The writer was appointed by IAC on behalf of Bord Gais Networks (BGN) to carry out riverbank and riverbed monitoring in accordance with archaeological conditions. Monitoring was carried out under licences 16D0073, 16R0178, 16E0506, an underwater licence, metal detecting licence and a monitoring/excavation.
These works follow on from a previous underwater assessment undertaken in 2014 (14D0025/14R0067) and in respect to Planning Ref 15/126.
The pipeline crossing is located on a small river to the west of Leighlinbridge in the townland of Moanduff. The Cork–Dublin pipeline (BGE/06) crosses the River Madlin west of Leighlinbridge in Co. Carlow at Pipeline Section 60 (60-RVX60A). The River Madlin is a tributary of the River Barrow and is prone to high flows. The pipeline is coated with Gunite weight coating for a distance of 15m. The pipeline wall thickness of 9.52mm extends for a distance of c. 30m each side of the original river centreline.
The Madlin River has meandered at the location where it passes over the existing Cork – Dublin gas pipeline, and Bord Gais Networks (BGN) want to ensure the safety and integrity of the cover to the pipeline.
No archaeological features or finds were identified during archaeological monitoring.
