An archaeological evaluation was undertaken prior to the proposed construction of a mixed-use development for 13 retail units and 70 residential units with parking and turning facilities at 16-52 Ogle Street, Armagh.
This phase of works was to facilitate the insertion of a single foundation in order to retain the planning permission for the site. To this end monitoring of the excavation of the foundation trenches for a single-storey extension to an existing property was conducted. Prior to the excavation of the foundation trenches, a boundary wall abutting the existing property had to be taken down. This is a modern addition to the property, constructed from dressed stone bonded with concrete. Following the removal of this wall, three foundation trenches were excavated. Trenches 1 and 2 were excavated using a back-acting machine fitted with a toothless bucket. Due to the foundations of the wall within the area of Trench 3, a toothed bucket had to be utilised.
No archaeological deposits were identified during the course of the evaluation.
