Pre-development archaeological evaluation was carried out in relation to the construction of a single 250kW turbine at lands approx. 280m north-west of Doctor’s Road, Ballymena, Co. Antrim in response to a request from the DoC:HED under Planning Policy Statement 6 Built Heritage 3 (PPS6:BH3) for more information. The request has been made with particular reference to ANT038:04, an Early Christian souterrain which is recorded as being located within the footprint of the turbine base. The desk-based research confirmed that the proposed turbine and access road is located within the vicinity of the monument but has not been able to uncover its precise location.
The footprint of the proposed turbine base was stripped of topsoil as a means of confirming whether the recorded archaeological monument survived within its footprint. Topsoil was found to directly overly natural subsoil with no evidence for any archaeological remains. It is therefore recommended that no further archaeological works are required in relation to the proposed development.
