An archaeological evaluation was carried out prior to the proposed construction of a residential development for people with complex needs on lands immediately north of 16 Abbey Road, Muckamore.
A total of 5 test trenches across the site were excavated using a back-acting machine fitted with a toothless bucket.
The site consisted of two former football pitches. The upper pitch has clearly been cut into the slope of the existing topography by up to 3m at its deepest point. The lower pitch also appears to have been cut into the hill at its southern end. The evaluation established that the site has previously been subject to extensive ground works in order to create the two sports pitches. No archaeological deposits were identified during the course of the evaluation.
