An archaeological evaluation was undertaken prior to the proposed construction of a 500kW Anaerobic Digester and Combined Heat and Power Plant on lands 45m North of 47 Crosshill Road, Crumlin. One recorded monument is located within the existing buildings adjacent to the proposed development. ANT 055:079 is identified in the SMR records as a medieval motte located within the existing farmyard.
A total of 15 trenches were excavated using a mechanical digger fitted with a toothless bucket. In each case a similar stratigraphy was identified. Sod was removed which was an average of 0.1m deep. This overlay an orange-brown silty clay loam measuring an average of 0.25m deep which directly overlay subsoil. Subsoil was a compact orange clay.
Nothing of archaeological significance was identified in any of the excavated trenches.
