An archaeological evaluation was carried out prior to the demolition of a modern extension to a listed building HB 26/50/116 and to the construction of a residential development with associated car parking, landscaping and ancillary works at 89 Durham Street, Belfast.
HB 26/50/116 is a grade B2 building identified as a symmetrical two-storey three-bay former Tuberculosis Clinic, built in 1917 to the designs of Young and Mackenzie.
Monitoring of all ground penetrating works was conducted for the proposed development. Ground reduction works were conducted using a back-acting machine fitted with a toothless bucket to the levels of naturally occurring subsoil or archaeological strata, whichever was highest. The evaluation took the form of four trenches excavated within the development area.
No archaeological deposits were identified during the course of the monitoring.
