An archaeological evaluation was carried out prior to Phase 3 works of the Bretton Hall development, Lisburn. Gahan and Long previously undertook monitoring here prior to construction of phase 1 of this development,under licence AE/07/139 (2007:61).
Monitoring of all ground penetrating works was undertaken and ground reduction was conducted using a back-acting machine fitted with a toothless bucket to the levels of naturally occurring subsoil.
The area stripped consisted of an area of approximately 75m x 100m. Topsoil was removed and found to directly overlie naturally occurring subsoil. Topsoil consisted of a dark brown silty clay and had a maximum depth of 0.35m, averaging at 0.3m. This directly subsoil which consisted of bands of compact light brown clay interspersed with very infrequent inclusion of degraded stone. An occasional modern agricultural furrow was identified cut into the subsoil, as well as several other agricultural features such as a modern farmers track.
Nothing of archaeological significance was identified in the stripped area.
