The test trenching was required to inform the planning decision and to establish whether there was archaeological activity on the development site. As archaeological material was uncovered on site (This took the form of a series of seven features: burnt mottled spreads, linear features and a large post-hole) the DfC HED archaeologists with responsibility for this area were informed. They visited the site on the afternoon of 3 November 2016. It was agreed with them that no further work of expansion investigation or dating would be carried out at this stage, rather an archaeological planning condition would be sought for the site and that any further archaeological expansion and investigation would be required to be carried out subsequent to the granting of planning permission for the development. The landowner was kept informed at all stages and indicated that his preferred option was dealing with any archaeological material on site subsequent to planning permission being granted. This does mean however that further archaeologically monitored mechanical expansion, excavation, recording and reporting of any archaeological material uncovered will need to be carried out prior to any archaeological planning condition being fulfilled.
