Testing was undertaken in advance of a proposed extension to the graveyard at St Mary's Church to fulfil a planning condition, planning ref. 14/206. The church is located on the south side of the N25 Cork to Waterford road. St Mary's Church is marked on the 1st edition OS map and is a protected structure; NIAH Reg. No. 22903803. There are no archaeological monuments in close proximity to the church and graveyard.

The area of the extension to the graveyard will be divided into two sections. A new car park will be located at the north end and 1967 new grave plots will be located in the south section. The land is currently in pasture. Nine test trenches were excavated in the area of the graveyard extension which is located to the east and south of the existing graveyard which surrounds the church. Two isolated pits were recorded, one at either end of the site. A charcoal production pit (0.6m x 0.5m x 0.15m in depth) was recorded at the north end of the site and a burnt grain pit (0.4m in diameter x 0.3m in depth) at the south end of the site. The test trenches were extended in the area of both pits but no further archaeological features were recorded. Due to the presence of the pits it is recommended that any further ground works in the area should be subjected to monitoring.
