The former canal basin lies between Dock Street to the west and south and Canal Street to the east. The northern part of the site is a large tarmac carpark area with grassy verges including a large area at the east side. The central part of the site consists of two large grassy areas divided by a central access road. The south of the proposed area consisted of another enclosed, large, hard surfaced area flanked by paths. There was no surface evidence for the canal.

Several trenches were excavtaed to identify the level of preservation of the canal basin. The remains of original walls of the basin were uncovered along with another wall which appears to date to the 19th century. Excavation revealed that the walls were in a good state of repair with most of the original surrounding coping stones intact. The trenches were backfilled and no development has to date taken place within this area. The canal basin is preserved in situ.
