A programme of monitoring was carried out for the construction of Gortscraheen (Crockbrack) wind farm at Gortscraheen (Crockbrack)/Lime Hill townlands, Pomeroy, County Tyrone. Fieldwork took place intermittently between 16 September 2014 to 16 February 2015. Monitoring took 5 months to complete, and machines fitted with flat grading buckets carried out all excavation.
Development works associated with the construction of the wind farm consisted of the excavation of a new access track, the upgrading of an existing site track and associated cabling, and the excavation of one crane hardstand area. Planning permission [I/2008/0157/F] was also received for the construction of an equipment cabin, and a mast within the adjoining wind farm development site at Cregganconroe and Tremoge Top townlands. The equipment cabin and mast site was relocated to a new area, south-east of its original location within the Cregganconroe wind farm development site.
Monitoring revealed sand and gravel, a dark organic sandy peat topsoil, and peat sealing in situ geologically deposited strata.
Site development works affected no archaeological features, structures, or monuments. No archaeological features or artefacts were revealed.
All monitoring was carried out as per the recommendations of the Archaeological Programme of Works.
