Testing was undertaken as part preparation of an Archaeological Impact Assessment with respect to a proposed mixed-use development at Castle Street, Roscommon. The Assessment was requested by the Planning Authority, following a recommendation from the NMS. The site is located immediately outside the north-eastern extent of the Zone of Archaeological Potential established for Roscommon Town – RO039-043; part of a former Avenue (RO039-044) from Roscommon Castle previously ran through the site. This is part of designed landscape relating to the fortified house phase of Roscommon Castle. The avenue extended east-north-east for a distance of approx. 2km and survives in some areas as linear fields defined by earthen banks and hedges with field drains. However, there are no extant or surface traces of this feature within, or in the immediate environs of, the development plot.
A total of seven test trenches were excavated by machine across the site and nothing of archaeological interest/potential was uncovered.
