Carnaross Sand and Gravel Ltd received planning permission to extend their quarry at Pottlereagh/Clonsillagh, Co. Meath. Condition 5 of the grant of planning requested pre-development testing on the site. Trial-trenching was carried out in two phases, the south-eastern portion of the site being tested in December 2015 and the north-western portion in March 2016. There are no Recorded Monuments on the development lands. The site is located in a kettle and kame area which results in a hillocky topography.
Eight trenches tested the south-east portion of the development site. Deposits of sand and gravel, in a brown clay matrix, were exposed under topsoil. Nothing of archaeological significance was exposed; one sherd of glazed red earthernware of 19th-century date was recovered from Trench 8.
