Monitoring of works associated with Furnace Lough Group Water Scheme was undertaken in 2015. This group water scheme was located north-west of Newport town and Clew Bay. The scheme ran in a linear fashion, parallel to the eastern shores of Furnace Lough, a large body of brackish water c. 130ha in area. The project involved the laying of c. 2km of water pipe in Fauleens, Callowbrack and Cloonfohler townlands. The landscape across the wider area consisted largely of blanket bog. At the southern end of the scheme marshy land dominated with areas of reed and cutaway bog. Further north the landscape changed to form a series of rolling rocky upland slopes overlooking Furnace Lough to the west. This upland area marked the southern fringes of the Nephin Beg mountain range to the north. No deposits, features or finds of an archaeological nature were encountered during monitoring.
