Archaeological testing was undertaken in advance of a social housing scheme, on a 0.4087 ha site in Cahernamart townland, in the barony of Murrisk, Civil Parish of Oughaval, in Westport town, Co. Mayo. The development site was located on high ground north of Westport Workhouse cemetery. This burial ground known locally as the ‘rockies’ is capped by a memorial cross and overlooked the development site to the north. Four test trenches c.100m long by 1m wide were excavated with the long axis running east-west across the site. They were spaced to give a maximum representative coverage across the proposed site. No deposits, features or finds of an archaeological nature were encountered during testing.
