Three test trenches were excavated in advance of the redevelopment of lands adjacent to the existing Credit Union, Market Square, Castlebar. The levels of the natural geology in the three trenches indicate that the site is perpendicular to a river valley and that the modern ground surfaces have been created by infill and terracing. Modern disturbance in the form of machine excavation was noted in all three trenches. Archaeological deposits were not noted and given the high degree of landscaping observed on the site it is very likely that, if previously present, these would have been destroyed in the 19th and 20th centuries.
