As a condition of Planning Permission, Test Trench Investigation of the proposed site of a Primary Care Centre for Westport took place on 9 September 2015. The investigation involved the excavation of c.162 linear metres of 2m-wide trenches across the site using a 13-ton tracked machine under supervision. The trenches were very deep, reaching 1.9m in places. Some areas could not be tested due to the presence of modern services, ESB overhead lines and a Japanese Knotweed infestation.
Main Findings
No archaeological features were observed anywhere within the site. No archaeological finds were observed or recovered during the investigations. The site would appear to have been stripped of a significant depth of soil in the recent past, and other material was subsequently brought into the grounds and dumped down upon the exposed subsoil. Photographic evidence suggests this took place around 2007 during the development of an adjacent site. This disturbance was seen almost uniformly across the site.
